From the Lowlands to the Highlands - Heres My College Expedition
Passion/Purpose Statement:
I would like to find a better way to enhance the customer sporting experience because technology can help to make the user experience more enjoyable and safer.
Sports, family, travel and school, these have been the four most prominent aspects of growing up in a family with four very active boys. As I was the youngest of the four boys I was dragged right into the active balanced childhood. Some may find it weird I placed sports first and school last but they were both very important; although sometimes while we were competing we had to travel as a family for various sport outings, which put school on the back burner. As a family, my parents gave each one of us the opportunity to choose a college to attend if we wished. As the “baby” of the family I was able to learn a lot from my older brothers, one of those lessons was how to tackle college. This has gotten me to today, a soon to be college graduate with a lifetime of experiences. I chose to come to school at the University of Utah where I would be able to explore, study, and experience new things. These experiences and in a way soul searching has brought me to realize my passions and a purpose for my future college education and as a future entrepreneur.

During my college career I have chosen to take an education path oriented around business, recreation and entrepreneurship. This path has helped me to realize some of the business potential within the recreation industry. Seeing all of the potential in the industry has driven me to try to find new ways to make the sporting industry more enjoyable and safe. This is what we (entrepreneurs) call value creation; a company must create a product or provide a service that creates value for the customer. Creating something of value for the sporting industry is not an easy task as there are a lot of large companies
that are also pushing to create value for their company. Since they have more resources available at their disposal including cash, this can be very hard for small companies to come out on top. But as a younger student in today’s technological industry I have a new outlook on the industry. My generation has grown up only knowing a world with technology and that includes the Internet, which will prove to be one of the human races greatest inventions. If there is a way to incorporate the Internet, and cloud computing/ storage into the sporting industry this could have the potential to change the industry drastically from an informational standpoint. Currently we know very general statistics and facts about the recreation industry. Having endless amounts of information from the industry could have an extreme benefit for development of new products. I have an interest in developing new products/ innovating and a part of that innovation is a safety factor. If there were a way to make a sport safer by using devices that are already very prominent in the consumer market that would be ideal. I hope to create value within the recreation industry so that I am able to participate, innovate and advance sporting industries throughout the world.
